Children's Medical Center

The Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation gave a $25,000 gift to the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Carroll and Cleo stopped by the hospital to present the check and meet a few of the children being treated as well as a few members of the incredible staff.

DALLAS - Native Texan Carroll Shelby will ride into Dallas with a $25,000 donation for Children's Medical Center Dallas on Friday, October 15, 2004. The legendary racecar driver and manufacturer will present a check on behalf of the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation at 1:45 PM CST before visiting patients at the hospital, which is located at 1935 Motor Street in Dallas.

"I have a special place in my heart for Texas," said Mr. Shelby. "I grew up here and many of my family continue to live in the area, so I'm pleased to give back to this community. I created the Foundation because too many children have their lives cut short without financial assistance. Children's Medical Center is doing great things and I hope this donation will help these kids get the care they need."

Carroll Shelby has enjoyed success in virtually every sports car and formula series in the world. In 1959, he won the famous 24 hours of Le Mans and was named Sports Car Illustrated's "Driver of the Year." Retiring from racing due to a heart ailment, he founded Shelby American and created the Cobra sports car in 1962. He was responsible for the Shelby G.T.350 and helped create the Dodge Viper.

Mr. Shelby is the oldest and longest living double organ recipient. He received a heart in 1990 and then his son Mike, a Dallas resident, donated a kidney to Mr. Shelby in 1996. He created the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation in October 1991. The organization is dedicated to providing assistance for acute coronary and kidney care for young people.

Children's Medical Center Dallas is one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States and provides care to more than 325,000 children annually. The hospital is known for its comprehensive pediatric ICU, specialty outpatient clinics and state-of-the-art emergency center.
